Bloody Mary Ingredients:

6.00 cl Vodka (≈ 2.0 oz)
18.00 cl Tomato juice (≈ 6.0 oz)
1.00 cl Dry sherry (≈ 0.33 oz) — small splash
0.50 cl Lemon juice (≈ 0.17 oz)
1 dash Tabasco sauce
1 dash Worcestershire sauce
Pinch of celery salt
1 fresh egg
Ice cubes
Celery stick

Bloody Mary Recipe Instructions:

Fill a tall glass (highball) with ice and set aside.

In a cocktail shaker, add vodka, tomato juice, dry sherry, lemon juice, Tabasco, and Worcestershire sauce.

Crack in the egg and shake without ice for about 10 seconds. This helps emulsify the egg and creates a smooth texture.

Add ice and shake again for another 10–15 seconds until well chilled.

Strain into the prepared glass over fresh ice.

Sprinkle a pinch of celery salt on top, add a celery stick, and serve immediately.

History of the Bloody Mary Cocktail

The origin of the Bloody Mary is debated, but most historians trace it to the early 1920s. One of the strongest claims credits bartender Fernand “Pete” Petiot, who worked at Harry’s New York Bar in Paris. He is believed to have mixed vodka and tomato juice for American expatriates shortly after World War I.

When Petiot later moved to New York and worked at the St. Regis Hotel, he refined the recipe by adding spices, lemon juice, and savory seasonings, turning it into the complex cocktail known today.

The name “Bloody Mary” has several theories. Some link it to Queen Mary I of England, known for her violent persecution of Protestants. Others believe the name came from customers or popular culture of the time. While the exact source remains uncertain, the drink’s bold red color clearly influenced the name.

Over the decades, the Bloody Mary became a staple brunch cocktail and a favorite hangover remedy, thanks to its salty and savory profile.

Cocktail of the day:

It’s said that tomato juice helps against an hangover.

That’s why the Bloody Mary cocktail recipe is the cocktail of the day for January 5, when The Hangover star Bradley Cooper celebrates his birthday.
