History of the Caipirinha Cocktail

The Caipirinha originated in Brazil in the early 20th century, in the countryside of São Paulo state. It was first used as a folk remedy for the Spanish flu, made with lime, garlic, honey, and cachaça. Over time, garlic and honey were removed, leaving the modern three-ingredient cocktail.

The name comes from the Portuguese word “caipira,” meaning country person, and “caipirinha” means “little country drink.”

As Brazil’s sugarcane industry grew, cachaça became widely available, and the Caipirinha spread from rural areas to urban bars. By the late 20th century, it became internationally famous and is now listed as an official IBA cocktail under the Contemporary Classics category.

Today, the Caipirinha is considered one of the most important cocktails in the world and the flagship drink of Brazilian cocktail culture.

Cocktail of the day:

This is the national cocktail of Brazil. So this is our cocktail of the day of 7 September as this is the Dia da Independência de Brazil.
