History of the Daiquiri Cocktail
The Daiquiri cocktail originated in Cuba in the late 19th century, near the town and beach of DaiquirÃ, close to Santiago de Cuba.
It is most commonly credited to Jennings Cox, an American mining engineer who reportedly mixed rum, lime, and sugar for guests when gin ran out during a party around 1898.
The drink spread internationally when Admiral Lucius W. Johnson introduced it to the U.S. Navy Club in Washington, D.C., after returning from Cuba. From there, it became popular in American bars during the early 20th century.
The Daiquiri gained further fame through Ernest Hemingway, who frequently drank a sugar-free version at El Floridita bar in Havana, later known as the Hemingway Daiquiri or Papa Doble.
