๐ History of the Hanky Panky Cocktail
The Hanky Panky cocktail was created in the early 1900s at the Savoy Hotel in London by Ada Coleman, one of the most influential bartenders in cocktail history and one of the first famous female bartenders.
Ada Coleman invented the drink for Sir Charles Hawtrey, a popular British actor, who asked her for something with a little more โpunchโ than his usual Martini. Coleman added a dash of Fernet-Branca, an Italian bitter herbal liqueur, to a Gin and Sweet Vermouth base.
After tasting it, Hawtrey reportedly exclaimed:
โBy Jove! That is the real hanky-panky!โ
โ a British expression meaning playful trickery or magic.
The name stuck, and the cocktail quickly became a favorite among Londonโs theatrical and social elite.
The recipe was later popularized worldwide by Harry Craddock, who included it in The Savoy Cocktail Book (1930), one of the most important cocktail books ever published.
Today, the Hanky Panky is recognized as an official IBA cocktail under the Unforgettables category.
