How to make the best Magarita cocktail recipe?

The Margarita cocktail is one of the most popular tequila cocktails in the world. Made with tequila, fresh lime juice, and orange liqueur, it is known for its perfect balance of sweet, sour, and strong, often served with a salt-rimmed glass.

Magarita ingredients:

Glass: Margarita glass or Coupe
Optional: Salt for rim

5 cl Tequila (100% agave, preferably Blanco) — 1.7 oz
2 cl Triple Sec (or Cointreau) — 0.7 oz
2 cl Fresh lime juice — 0.7 oz
Ice cubes

Classic ratio: 2 : 1 : 1 (Tequila : Orange liqueur : Lime juice)

Margarita recipe instructions:

Salt the rim (optional):
Rub a lime wedge around the rim of the glass and dip it into salt. Set aside.
Fill a shaker with ice.
Add tequila, triple sec, and fresh lime juice.
Shake hard for 10–15 seconds until well chilled.
Strain into the prepared glass over fresh ice or straight up, depending on preference.
Garnish with a lime wheel or wedge and serve immediately.

History of the Margarita Cocktail

The exact origin of the Margarita cocktail is debated, but most historians agree it was created in Mexico in the late 1930s or 1940s, as tequila began gaining popularity with American travelers.

Several origin stories exist:

• One credits Carlos “Danny” Herrera at Rancho La Gloria near Tijuana, who reportedly created the drink for a guest allergic to most spirits except tequila.

• Another attributes it to Margarita Sames, a Dallas socialite who served it at her Acapulco home in 1948.

• A third links it to bartenders adapting the classic Daisy cocktail (in Spanish, Margarita means daisy), replacing brandy with tequila.

What is historically certain is that the Margarita follows the classic sour cocktail structure:
spirit + citrus + sweetener, which explains its lasting popularity and perfect balance.

Today, the Margarita is an official IBA cocktail and remains the best-selling tequila cocktail worldwide.
